James co-founded Prospect as the Head of Analytics, along with Gordon as head of our commercial vision. Previously, he worked as a data journalist at The Economist, where he used statistics and coding to tell stories about all sorts of subjects. In 2021 he was named a joint winner of the Data Journalist of the Year award by the Society of Editors for his work on excess mortality during the covid-19 pandemic. He was also highly commended by the Royal Statistical Society and participated in a WHO advisory group on covid statistics.
James’s passion has always been sports, having grown up as an avid Arsenal fan and enthusiastic player of rugby, cricket, and tennis. At The Economist, he edited and wrote data-driven pieces about football, rugby, cricket, basketball, baseball, the NFL, tennis, golf and the Olympics. He founded Prospect because he believed that there was scope to use this sort of analysis on the performance and commercial side of sports.
James built several of the models that Prospect’s clients have used to achieve success on and off the field, which continue to be refined and expanded by our data science and engineering teams.
